We know you want to keep your head gasket in as good of condition as possible. A blown head gasket spells big trouble for your diesel engine.

But what can you do to help prevent this issue?

CATERPILLAR CYLINDER HEADS, STAGE 4 WITH FIRE RINGWell, if you're running a high performance, high horsepower engine, you run an increased risk of blowing that gasket by pushing it beyond its intended performance limits.

If this is the case for you, it could be beneficial to consider installing a fire ring cylinder head. What exactly does this mean and how can it help your engine?

We're taking you through the basics of fire rings and how they can help prevent head gasket damage in extreme operating conditions.

How Do You Know Your Head Gasket is Failing?

Head gaskets don't normally just fail. Usually, you have a larger issue going on in your diesel engine.

So, you're going to want to identify the root cause of your problem to help prevent it from damaging your gasket in the future.

Symptoms of a Blown Head Gasket

If you're having trouble with your gasket, you might notice:

  • Engine Overheating

  • Poor Performance

  • Loss of Coolant

  • Compression in Your Cooling System

If you're experiencing any of these problems, you probably have something serious happening in your engine.

What This Means for High Performance Engines

With a high performance engine, you have higher than normal temperatures and pressures in your combustion chamber. This extreme engine environment can eventually lead to a damaged or blown gasket.

If this sounds like your engine, it might be time to take a look at upgrading your cylinder head to one with fire rings machined into the deck.

What Are Fire Rings?

So, just what is a fire ring?

In a fire ring cylinder head, a groove is machined around each combustion chamber. They then insert a stainless steel ring into the groove.

This ring contacts the outer edge of the fire ring in the head gasket, creating an additional, better seal around the combustion chamber.

What Engines Are Fire Ring Cylinder Heads Good For?

If you want greater reliability under extreme operating conditions, then a machined fire ring cylinder head might be right for your engine. It is especially ideal for high horsepower engines.

At HHP, we carry Stage 4 Cylinder Heads with fire rings for CAT applications. This is one of the best options out there for your high horsepower or modified engine.
