When you're looking to rebuild a diesel engine, it's important to find your engine serial number to ensure proper fit. Your Perkins engine is no different.
Perkins engines are generally separated into two categories. There are the pre-1978 engines and the post-1978. Post-1978 engines include engines that are currently being produced.
In the pre-1978 engines, you'll be looking for a serial number with a max of 13 digits, including codes for the cubic inch capacity, the manufacturing country, OEM, serial number, and a letter that references special features.
The format for the later engines starts with two letters representing the engine family, five numbers for the build number or engine order reference, then a letter that indicates the manufacturing country, your engine number, and it ends with a final number that indicates the manufacturing year.
The ESN on a Perkins engine is often found on a tag on the engine block. It's not always in the same spot on different applications, so you may have to check a few places.
